英文履歷撰寫簡介》


履歷表英文稱之為 Resume ,然而在企業的求職要求中也常可看見 C.V 這個名詞。所謂的 C.V 就是 curriculum vitae 的縮寫,也就是簡歷表的意思。

簡歷表(C.V)要比履歷表(Resume)更簡要一些。參考案例可見此網頁,目前許多工作職缺通常會要求求職者提供 Resume 或 C.V 。

英文履歷表不像中文履歷表,有制式的表格。然而一份專業的履歷表,還是有一些共同的要素,不能遺漏。所以英文履歷要怎麼寫呢?通常英式履歷表包含:
  1. 履歷表(Resume)
  2. 求職信(Cover Letter)
此外「英文自傳」(Autobiography)則是臺灣求職要求中常見的項目。以下針對各項目提供簡單的說明。

Résumé Dos & Don’ts

 

Important Dos

  • Make it attractive to the eye as well as designed for easy scanning – it must pass the “30 second review test” – Keep it BRIEF!
  • Use action phrases rather than complete sentences or paragraphs – stress accomplishments - use action verbs and industry buzz words.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent and orderly presentation throughout your resume.
  • Make certain your resume is well-spaced. Include "white space" in design.
  • Check spelling, punctuation and grammar and have it critiqued and proofread – by the placement officer, and at least two other people.
  • Select good quality white – or very lightly colored paper for mailed or hand-out copies.
  • Reproduce on a word processor with letter-quality printer.
  • State an employer-centered "Objective" and/or "Summary of Qualifications".  
  • For traditional college students do keep your resume to 1 page                              

Important Don'ts:

  • Type "Résumé" above your name.
  • Use personal pronouns such as "I" or "my."
  • Include personal date (i.e., Height, weight, health status, date of birth) or a photograph.
  • Number the pages of your resume.
  • Use abbreviations (except in the cases of Grade Point Average-GPA, and state names).
  •  List previous salaries, supervisors, or reasons for leaving.
  • Use brightly colored paper.

Always Include:

  • Name, address, phone number and e-mail – include both college and home information.  No other personal information is needed.
  • Education - list name of college, city and state; degree and actual or expected graduation date; major and special emphasis (i.e., Computer information systems, networking); GPA, Dean's List, etc.  Consider a Relevant Coursework section, if you do not have any or very little relevant work experience.
  • Professional/work experience - list relevant jobs both full-time and part-time, volunteer work or other experience.  You can also include involvement in clubs/organizations, offices or chair positions you have held.
  • Other sections – these sections are for additional information that reflects your accomplishments, activities and associations. Categories for this area might be volunteer activities, community involvement, awards/honors, professional associations, relevant coursework, etc.
  • Skills section: Include Computer, language, culinary, etc. skills that the employer may be looking for.

Checklist

Are you done? Then try this checklist.
  • One page only, unless you have significant previous experience
  • Word processor generated, with full spell check (automated and manual) and proofing
  • Times Roman or other Serif font, 10 point to 12 point size (12 point is best)
  • No more than two fonts or two sizes
  • Margins no less than 1" and no more than 1.5"
  • Quality bond paper, 8½ " x 11"
  • Contact information clearly stated; campus and permanent addresses both listed if appropriate
  • Clear, focused objective
  • Summary of your top three or four accomplishments, skills or competencies listed as bullet points
  • Degree listed first, college/university second
  • GPA listed if over 3.0
  • Major GPA listed if over 3.0 and your overall GPA is under 3.0
  • Graduation date listed, even if you have not yet graduated
  • Experience section listing notable accomplishments
  • Descriptive (not actual) job titles
  • Industry buzzwords and keywords included
  • Activities section listing your most notable extracurricular activities
  • No personal data or potentially discriminatory data
  • Spell-check and grammar-check your resumetwice; then have at least two other people do it for you again.

英文簡歷表撰寫技巧

1. Cover Letter撰寫
當準備好了個人履歷表、自傳及相關文件之後,你就直接將這些資料寄出去嗎?其實最有禮貌的作法,還是要附上一封"Cover Letter",即所謂的應徵函或自薦信,簡單的說明自己從何處得知該公司徵才的訊息,以及應徵該職務的原因,並客氣的請求公司主管詳讀個人資料並提供面試機會,這樣的作法才不會讓求才公司覺得突兀或沒有禮貌。而這份文件的撰寫,只要比照一般商用文書的格式與書寫原則即可。
範例一
Dear Mr. Lee:

Having heard that the situation of a cashier in your office is vacant. I wish to offer my service for it.

I am 25 years of age, and have worked for fifteen months in a similar position for ABC Co., Ltd., Taipei. I left them solely becuse they made a reduction in their establishment.

I hope to have the pleasure of your granting me an interview.

                    Very truly yours,
                    Gary Chen.
範例二
Dear Sir:

I have learned from a friend that there is a vacancy in the YK Grammer
School, and I wish to apply for the position.

I graduated from Harvardy 1982. For the last three years I have been teaching chemistry at Chung-wha High School, in Taichung city. I am also per-mitted to refer to Professor John Powell, of the Education Department at the Taipei Normal College.

I should welcome a personal interview at your convenience and enclosing a brief personal history.

2. 英文履歷撰寫原則與建議
許多求職者會誤認為外商公司需要非常強的外語能力才能夠加入,因此一看到外商的徵才啟事上佈滿密密麻麻的英文字時總會退步三分,但事實上,國內大多數的外商公司皆會聘用本國籍的主管擔任負責人,且大部份的外商公司也沒有想像中「外語天地」般的需要極強的英文能力才能溝通,但是,由於外商公司在某些時候需要與外籍主管或客戶聯絡,所以基本的英文對話能力與書信能力是必要的,重點是在於溝通過程中不至於產生極大的誤差即可。
而撰寫英文履歷與自傳,其實只要掌握幾個基本原則,把自己的WORK EXPERIENCE以及EDUCATION等資料詳細交代,相信雇主就能很清楚的瞭解你是不是他們所要的人才了。
以下提供幾個建議與基本原則供參考:
a. 注意履歷表與自傳版面安排是否清晰易讀、字數恰當
b. 針對自己與應徵職務有關的專長與經歷做發揮
c. 太過細節的個人資料可視情況省略,如薪資、身高體
重、興趣等
d. 正確使用文法,詞彙與語句簡單明瞭即可
e. 適當的表現自信,但應避免過於自我,如"I ...."
頭的語句勿使用太多
f. 可請以前的主管或師長寫推薦信佐證自己的背景與能  
4. 重要欄位名詞
a.JOB OBJECTIVEJOB TARGETPOSITION DESIRED
簡單說明應徵的職務名稱即可,如"Product Manager"(產品經理)、"Assistant"(助理)、"Sales Representative"(業務代表)以及"Software Engineer"(軟體工程師)。
b.PERSONAL DATA
應條列式逐一說明,主要包括個人基本資料,如NamePresent addressTelephoneZIP Code(郵遞區號)、 Date of birthBorn(生日)、Marital statusMarr- iage(婚姻狀況)、 Language skills(語言能力)、 Height(身高)、Weight(體重)。
c.EDUCATIONEDUCATION & TRAINING
應由最近畢業到最久以前曾經就讀過的學校加以說明,包括Major Courses(主修)、CollegeUniversity(校名)、Degree(學位)以及起訖年代,最好以條列式表達。
d.WORK EXPERIENCEWORK HISTORY
也是由最近的公司到最久以前任職的公司條列式說明,包括每份工作的時期、公司名
稱以及職務名稱。
e.SKILLSWORKING KNOWLEDGEACCOMPLISHMENT
以條列式說明自己的專長、受過的訓練以及過去的貢獻,可依各項目的重要性或與應徵職務關係的程度先後順序加以說明。
f.AUTOBIOGRAPHY
自傳其實是個人背景以及學、經歷、專長的附加說明,只要充分明白的補充或強調自己的優點與想法即可,不需要長篇大論或使用過於艱深的語句。
g.REFERENCES
可以補充一兩個過去的主管或師長的聯絡方式或電話,請他們佐證自己的專長背景與能力。
